Make your computer noise free.

When setting up a new PC you may find that it tends to be much louder than necessary. When faced with this problem, make sure to breakdown the situation and the hardware. Narrow down the noisiest of the lot and zero in on them.

Generally, issues of sound can be attributed to fans; video fan card, the cpu fan or the power supply unit fan, and sometimes even hard drives that make noise on your system.

Regulating Fan Speeds

To regulate fans you will have to explore options involving hardware solutions since software cannot help regulate all fans. For instance, if your PC fan is too loud, you can get an adapter to under-volt them to lower the rotating speed and hence the noise. Alternatively, buying a better fan will automatically solve the problem.  As far as programs go, the following two are useful in regulating fan speeds by selecting relevant components of the PC.

What? Speedfan is a program that is used to monitor and display fan speeds, voltage information and temperature readings in the program interface. The two important details to look for on the start up page is the fan speeds, to the left of the screen, and temperature readings, to the right of the screen. Using the Pwn control helps to reduce the speed of your PC fan. If you have less than 6 fans installed, it’s likely that only some of them may work. The three controls to the left usually control the first three fans listed and the three to the right control the remaining three fans.

How? The RPM of the fans can be adjusted by choosing the speed using the arrows or by entering a new value in the RMP field. It is not advisable to put in a value of 0, due to the risk of overheating your system.By using the controls, you can choose various values and listen to the noise generated by the fan. This noise will become considerably less from the 70% mark and lower.

It would be useful to keep a watch of the temperature to ensure it does not reach critical values after the changes made to the RMP. When it is at a critical level, this will be indicated by red flames.

MSI Afterburner

What? The MSI Afterburner is a very interesting program that keeps track of several things like over or under clocking the video card or record full screen game videos.

How? The fan speeds can be controlled on the main interface of the MSI Afterburner

A slightly better method is to go to Settings and to the Fan tab. From here the fan speed can be controlled in relation to the temperature and graphics card. This would mean that the fan speed would automatically alter itself to go faster or slower depending on the work being done and the hardware acceleration.

Things to keep in mind

–        Regularly monitor the temperature on your PC to make sure any changes made in speed do not cause over-heating

–        Remember to check on your fan speed and alter it to external changes in temperature. The speed will have to be increased during summer months.

–        Account for other settings like your PC set up

–        If you use other programs make sure to factor in hardware solutions.
